Call Your Damn Mama

Intro Four thousand pictures in that phone, boy. Not one minute of her voice. Sit down.

Verse 1 Don't hand me that word busy I built my life on busy, son Busy's just a coward's way of choosing And I always chose the wrong one You ain't busy, boy, you're hiding 'Cause her voice makes you feel small Like you owe her more than minutes Well, you do So pay up Call

Chorus Call your damn mama, boy Right now — I'll wait, go on Ain't a deal, ain't a girl, ain't a dollar Worth a voice that'll soon be gone You think you got forever Forever's a lyin' friend Call your damn mama, boy Some calls don't come again

Verse 2 The day she passed I was in Denver Closing something big I silenced her call in a boardroom Full of men I never saw again And here's the part that guts me No voicemail that last time First time in thirty years of trying I guess she finally learned the lesson I'd spent my whole life teaching her

Chorus Call your damn mama, boy Right now — I'll wait, go on Ain't a deal, ain't a girl, ain't a dollar Worth a voice that'll soon be gone You think you got forever Forever's a lyin' friend Call your damn mama, boy Some calls don't come again

Bridge Some nights, whiskey-deep, I dial her A stranger keeps that number now First few times he cussed me sideways Now he answers anyhow Last month he just said, "Goodnight, brother" Stayed on the line till I hung up When even strangers pity what you buried Boy, that's what your waiting costs So he called I heard her laughing through the speaker Damn near broke me where I stood Call your damn mama, boy Right now — I'll wait, go on Ain't a deal, ain't a girl, ain't a dollar Worth a voice that'll soon be gone He said, "Ma, I just called to hear you" Lord, I felt that from the truck Call your damn mama, boy While there's someone picking up

Outro Tell her you love her. The actual words, boy. Men die with them words still in their teeth. Go on. She's awake. They're always awake for you.
