Hank Williams III

Hank Williams III on Spotify Wikipedia

Shelton Hank Williams, born in Nashville in 1972, is the grandson of Hank Williams and son of Hank Williams Jr., with a voice and profile so close to his grandfather's that it unsettled Nashville veterans. He signed with Curb Records in the late 1990s and cut Risin' Outlaw (1999) and Lovesick, Broke and Driftin' (2002) before the label fights began. Straight to Hell (2006) became the first major-label country album released with a parental-advisory sticker and stands as the underground's founding document. His concerts ran a deliberate Jekyll-and-Hyde arc: a full traditional country set followed by a punk-and-metal back half with his band Assjack. On the side he played bass in Superjoint Ritual and drums in Arson Anthem with Pantera's Phil Anselmo. After breaking free of Curb, he went fully independent in 2011 on his own Hank3 label, releasing the sprawling Ghost to a Ghost/Gutter Town (2011) and Brothers of the 4x4 (2013), then withdrew almost entirely from the industry — a silence that has only deepened his cult standing.

Why they matter to dark country

Hank3 is the bridge nearly every modern dark-country act walked across. He coined "hellbilly" for his fusion of honky-tonk, punk speed and doom weight, proving country could hit as hard as metal without losing its twang. Straight to Hell's banjo-driven menace set the sonic template for the whole underground, and his very public war with his Nashville label made independence itself part of the genre's identity. The DIY dark-country circuit that formed in his wake — the Muddy Roots world — treats him as its godfather.
