Lord Huron

Lord Huron began around 2010 as the solo recording project of Ben Schneider, a visual artist from Okemos, Michigan, who named it for Lake Huron and grew it into a four-piece with Mark Barry, Miguel Briseno, and Tom Renaud. From the debut Lonesome Dreams (2012, Iamsound) onward, Schneider has wrapped every album in an elaborate fictional universe of pulp-western characters and invented ephemera. Strange Trails (2015) supplied the sleeper hit: 'The Night We Met' exploded two years later through Netflix's 13 Reasons Why, earned the band a Republic Records deal, and has since climbed past multi-billion stream counts and an 11x Platinum RIAA certification. Vide Noir (2018) and Long Lost (2021) deepened the noir and ghost-radio atmospherics -- Long Lost debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart -- and The Cosmic Selector Vol. 1 (July 18, 2025, Mercury) added collaborators including Kristen Stewart. Today they are the widest door through which mainstream listeners enter cinematic, ghost-haunted americana.

Why they matter to dark country

Lord Huron is gothic americana's atmospheric, radio-scale wing. Strange Trails plays like a horror comic set to reverb-drenched western guitar -- undead avengers, cursed lovers, ominous woods -- and 'Meet Me in the Woods' and 'Love Like Ghosts' are the standard gateway tracks on dark-americana playlists. Schneider performs inside a self-built mythology of masked alter egos (the skull-masked World Ender) and a phantom radio station, carrying the genre's ghost-story theatricality to an audience of 24 million monthly listeners that no darker act comes close to reaching.
