The Red Clay Strays

Wikipedia

Six working musicians from Mobile, Alabama formed the Red Clay Strays in 2016 and spent years grinding through Gulf Coast bars and casino gigs. They self-released their debut Moment of Truth in 2022 to little national notice — until a live clip of 'Wondering Why,' showcasing singer Brandon Coleman's quivering, Elvis-meets-gospel delivery, went viral on TikTok in late 2023 and pushed the song onto the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 71. Everything accelerated from there: an RCA deal, the Dave Cobb-produced Made by These Moments (2024), stadium dates opening for the Rolling Stones' Hackney Diamonds Tour, and a sweep of honors — Americana Emerging Artist (2024), ACM New Vocal Duo or Group (2025), and the CMA's Vocal Group of the Year (2025). Their third album Grateful arrived June 5, 2026 on RCA/HBYCO, and the Grateful Tour '26 has them headlining arenas: Boston's TD Garden, two nights at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, and Madison Square Garden on August 9, 2026 — a show being recorded live.

Why they matter to dark country

The Strays' pull comes from the tension between church and barroom: slow-burning, minor-key soul-country about doubt, sin, and salvation, delivered with revival-tent intensity. Coleman sings like a haunted man and the band lets songs smolder rather than explode — a brooding southern-gothic mood closer to Faulkner's Alabama than to Music Row. Their two-year jump from dive bars to amphitheaters proved that dark, spiritually anguished country-soul could be an arena-scale draw, raising the ceiling for the whole scene.
