Haggard was born in 1937 outside Bakersfield, California, to Dust Bowl migrants from Oklahoma and raised in a converted railroad boxcar. After his father died young, he cycled through freight-hopping and petty crime until a botched burglary landed him in San Quentin in 1958. Seeing Johnny Cash perform at the prison helped convince him to bet on music; released in 1960, he was granted a full and unconditional pardon by Governor Ronald Reagan in 1972, by which point he was already a star. With Buck Owens he defined the Bakersfield sound — Telecaster twang and dance-hall grit built in deliberate opposition to Nashville's orchestrated polish — and racked up 38 No. 1 country singles, from 'Mama Tried' to 'Okie from Muskogee.' The honors eventually included the Country Music Hall of Fame (1994), a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), and Kennedy Center Honors (2010). He kept touring nearly to the end, dying of pneumonia complications on April 6, 2016 — his 79th birthday.

Haggard gave outlaw country its documentary conscience. Where others borrowed the convict pose, he had the cell number: 'Mama Tried' and 'Sing Me Back Home' — the latter a death-row ballad drawn from men he knew inside San Quentin — carry an unsentimental, lived-in darkness no costume outlaw could fake. That convict's-eye realism about prison, poverty, and drink became the moral bedrock every dark-country songwriter chasing authenticity still builds on.
