David Eugene Edwards and bassist Pascal Humbert met in 1992 building film sets in Los Angeles, formed 16 Horsepower with drummer Jean-Yves Tola, and relocated to Denver, where the sound crystallized: banjo, bandoneon, Chemnitzer concertina, and slide guitar wound around Edwards' quavering, Old Testament howl. Their 1996 A&M debut Sackcloth 'n' Ashes drew wide acclaim, especially in Europe, and across Low Estate (1997), Secret South (2000), and Folklore (2002) they built the vocabulary critics came to call gothic americana, or the 'Denver sound.' The band dissolved in April 2005, citing personal, political, and spiritual differences; Edwards carried the flame into Wovenhand while Tola and Humbert formed Lilium. In December 2025 came the announcement fans had stopped expecting: the core trio, joined by Wovenhand guitarist Chuck French, would reunite for a 2026 European tour plus an exclusive US festival set at Fire in the Mountains — the first 16 Horsepower shows in more than twenty years, with setlists leaning heavily on Sackcloth 'n' Ashes.
Why they matter to dark country
16 Horsepower didn't join gothic americana — they effectively invented it. By running Appalachian folk, bluegrass, and gospel instrumentation through post-punk electricity and genuine religious dread — Edwards, a preacher's grandson, sang damnation like he meant it — they created the template nearly every dark-country act since has worked from. 'Black Soul Choir' remains the genre's unofficial anthem, and the Denver scene they seeded (Wovenhand, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, and beyond) turned their sound into a durable tradition.
