Cody Jinks, born in 1980 in Haltom City, Texas, spent the late 1990s fronting Unchecked Aggression, a thrash metal band working Fort Worth bars. When it dissolved, he rebuilt himself as a country singer and ground through a decade of Texas honky-tonks before Adobe Sessions (2015) -- home of 'Loud and Heavy' -- caught fire online. I'm Not the Devil (2016) reached the top 5 of Billboard's country albums chart with no major label behind it, and Lifers (2018) went to No. 2. After a stint with Rounder Records, Jinks launched his own label, Late August Records, and built one of the biggest fully independent operations in country music: billions of career streams, a string of gold and platinum singles including 'Loud and Heavy,' and arena-level touring. The metal half of his brain never left -- in 2021 he released None the Wiser with his doom-metal side band Caned by Nod alongside his country records, most recently Change the Game (2024).
Why they matter to dark country
Jinks is the commercial proof-of-concept for dark country. 'Loud and Heavy' -- brooding, storm-haunted, delivered in a doomy baritone -- is one of the tag's defining tracks, and his thrash roots give his catalog the low-end menace playlist curators mean when they say 'dark.' He built a multi-million-listener audience for that sound with zero major-label help, demonstrating the gothic end of country can sustain arenas, vinyl box sets, and even a doom-metal side record entirely on its own terms.
