Jamey Johnson grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and spent eight years in the Marine Corps Reserve before committing to Nashville. He first made his name writing for others, co-penning Trace Adkins' "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" and George Strait's chart-topping "Give It Away," which brought him the CMA Song of the Year award in 2007. After his debut The Dollar (2006) stalled and BNA dropped him, he cut That Lonesome Song on his own terms; Mercury Nashville released it in 2008 and it went double platinum behind "In Color," a top-ten single that won both CMA and ACM Song of the Year. The sprawling double album The Guitar Song (2010) debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, followed by a Hank Cochran tribute in 2012. After more than a decade without a new studio album, he returned with Midnight Gasoline (2024) on Warner Nashville. A three-time Grammy nominee, he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 2022.
Why they matter to dark country
Johnson anchors the bleak, traditionalist end of the outlaw revival. That Lonesome Song was written in the wreckage of a divorce and a lost record deal, and it sounds like it: sparse, unhurried arrangements under a gravel baritone that owes more to Waylon Jennings and Vern Gosdin than to anything on country radio. "High Cost of Living" remains one of mainstream country's most unflinching addiction narratives, and that willingness to sit with ruin instead of resolving it by the last verse is precisely the sensibility dark-country playlists are built on.
