The Dead South formed in Regina, Saskatchewan in 2012: Nate Hilts (lead vocals, guitar), Scott Pringle (mandolin, vocals), Colton Crawford (banjo) and Danny Kenyon (cello), an all-acoustic four-piece with no drummer and a cello working the bass register. After a 2013 EP they released Good Company (2014), but the turning point came in October 2016, when the music video for "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company" hit YouTube and went viral in slow motion, eventually passing 470 million views and pushing the song onto Billboard charts a year after the fact. Illusion and Doubt (2016) and Sugar & Joy (2019) each won the Juno Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year, the latter also topping the US bluegrass chart, and Chains & Stakes arrived in 2024 on Six Shooter Records. Their uniform of white shirts, bolo ties and wide-brimmed hats has become as recognizable as the sound itself.
Why they matter to dark country
Practically every dark-country or gothic-bluegrass playlist is seeded with "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company," and the band earns the slot: their catalog runs on murder ballads, guilt, revenge and frontier menace taken at breakneck bluegrass tempo, with Kenyon's cello supplying the low, ominous drone a bass would. They made the macabre catchy — a gateway act that pulls rock and metal audiences into acoustic roots music — and their villain-cowboy visual identity largely defines the genre's aesthetic online.
