The White Buffalo is Jake Smith, an Oregon-born, Southern California-raised singer-songwriter with a huge, weathered baritone frequently compared to Eddie Vedder's. He came up through punk and surf culture — his song "Wrong" landed in the 2001 surf film Shelter — before settling into a run of stark Americana records including Once Upon a Time in the West (2012), Shadows, Greys and Evil Ways (2013), Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights (2017), Year of the Dark Horse (2022) and A Freight Train Through the Night (2024). Television made him a cult figure: his songs ran across all seven seasons of Sons of Anarchy, culminating in "Come Join the Murder" (with The Forest Rangers), which closed the series finale, reached No. 9 on Billboard's Hot Rock chart and earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music and Lyrics. His music has also appeared in Californication, Longmire, The Punisher, This Is Us and the film Logan, and he has released through Unison, Thirty Tigers and Snakefarm.
Why they matter to dark country
Smith's catalog is the balladry wing of dark americana: slow, brooding story-songs about killers, drinkers, guilt and hard-won grace, delivered in a baritone that can make a lullaby sound like a threat. Sons of Anarchy fixed him in the public ear as the voice of outlaw storytelling on screen, and "Oh Darlin' What Have I Done" and "The Whistler" have been dark-country playlist fixtures ever since. Where much of the genre leans on tempo or twang, he supplies the noir — intimate, cinematic, heavy.
