Those Poor Bastards

Wikipedia

Formed in Madison, Wisconsin in 2004, Those Poor Bastards are the duo of singer-guitarist Lonesome Wyatt and a masked multi-instrumentalist known only as The Minister. Across two decades, roughly fourteen studio albums and six EPs — all issued through their own Tribulation Recording Company — they have built a self-contained universe of doom-laden country: detuned banjo, funeral-parlor organ, warped tape hiss, and sermons on sin, death, and a wrathful God. Their pivotal early break came when Hank Williams III covered 'Pills I Took' on his 2006 album Straight to Hell, carrying their sound into the wider underground country audience. The pair have stayed deliberately mysterious and stubbornly prolific ever since, touring North America and Europe (with Vincent Presley joining live on drums and keys) while Wyatt also runs the ghostlier side project Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks. Their latest album, Black Tongue, arrived March 31, 2026, and is among the rawest, most apocalyptic records in their catalog.

Why they matter to dark country

More than any other act, Those Poor Bastards turned 'gothic country' from a description into a genre. Since 2004 they have defined its sonic vocabulary — primitive banjo, doom-slowed hymns, horror-film atmosphere — and its lyrical fixations: damnation, disease, hellfire, and the grave. Running their own Tribulation label for twenty-plus years gave the scene an institutional anchor, and Hank Williams III's cover of 'Pills I Took' wired their sound directly into outlaw country's bloodstream. Most dark-country playlists descend from the template this duo built.
