Chris Stapleton spent almost two decades as one of Nashville's most dependable songwriters before the wider world learned his voice. Born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1978, he moved to Nashville in 1996, signed with the Sea Gayle Music publishing house, and wrote six number-one country hits for other artists, including Josh Turner's 'Your Man' and Luke Bryan's 'Drink a Beer', plus cuts recorded by George Strait, Kenny Chesney, and Adele. He fronted the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers from 2007 to 2010 and later the Southern-rock outfit The Jompson Brothers before his 2015 solo debut Traveller topped the Billboard 200 and eventually went seven-times platinum; his cover of 'Tennessee Whiskey' is now RIAA diamond-certified. With his wife Morgane singing harmony, Stapleton has collected 12 Grammy Awards, 15 CMA Awards, and 11 ACM Awards, and was named ACM Artist-Songwriter of the Decade in 2019. His most recent studio album is Higher (2023), and he remains the biggest streaming act in traditional-leaning country.
Why they matter to dark country
Stapleton is the commercial anchor of the modern outlaw-traditionalist lane. His records strip country back to sparse, blues-heavy, 1970s Waylon-style arrangements, and his catalog leans hard on sin and mortality: 'Broken Halos' mourns the dead, 'White Horse' swept the 2024 country Grammys on dark-western imagery, and 'Midnight Train to Memphis' is a jailhouse stomp carried over from his SteelDrivers days. His breakout proved a mass audience exists for rough-edged, unpolished country, clearing space for the Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers tier this roundup is built on.
