The Shadow I Became 3 (Alt 3)

Intro

Verse 1 I used to pray with dirty hands, Waiting on a sign But heaven stayed quiet, Like it already buried mine I left my mercy in the dirt, Where the crows don’t speak Put my old name in the ground, And let the shadow breathe

Pre-Chorus They said a man can still be saved If he falls down on his knees But I spent too long in the fire Now the fire kneels to me

Chorus I am the shadow I became, The smoke after the flame The last thing left when heaven quits And hell forgets your name I am the shadow I became, No cross above my grave I didn’t run from darkness, son I taught it how to behave

Verse 2 There’s a mirror in a motel room, But that face don’t look like mine Same black hat, same tired eyes, Something dead behind I heard my mama call me home, But home don’t sound the same When every road that leads you back Still remembers your shame

Pre-Chorus I gave the light a thousand chances, It left me in the rain So I shook hands with silence, And I let it wear my name

Chorus I am the shadow I became, The smoke after the flame The last thing left when heaven quits And hell forgets your name I am the shadow I became, No cross above my grave I didn’t run from darkness, son I taught it how to behave

Bridge Don’t go looking for the old me, He don’t answer anymore He’s sleeping under blacktop, Behind a locked church door I am the shadow I became, The smoke after the flame The last thing left when heaven quits And hell forgets your name I am the shadow I became, No blood left to bleed I used to beg the light for mercy, Now the dark kneels down to me

Outro I didn’t become evil. I became what survived.
