Candle for a Thief (Alt 1)

I lit a candle for a thief, Burned it slow for my belief. Every flame’s a little lie, Every truth learns how to die.

I stole my peace from broken hands, Buried love in borrowed lands. The night forgives what dawn reveals, And mercy cuts on rusted steel.

So I light a candle for a thief, For every sin that gave me grief. The flame don’t judge, the dark don’t weep, They just guard the secrets I keep. Yeah, I light a candle for a thief — And pray the shadows sleep.

I took what wasn’t mine to hold, Not for greed, but to stay whole. Each mile’s a sin, each scar a hymn, I burned the church I found within.

You can’t atone in dust and rain, Only learn to live with pain. And though I’ve stolen, bled, and lied, I still kept faith by firelight.

“They say thieves die cold. But I’ve felt colder livin’ clean.”

So I light a candle for a thief, In a world that don’t believe. The flame still flickers when I’m gone, Still hums that lonesome song. Yeah, I light a candle for a thief — To prove I still belong.

So I light a candle for a thief, And let the ashes fall in peace. Every crime’s a prayer half-spoken, Every soul a vow left broken. Yeah, I light a candle for a thief — And call that mercy brief.

“Some fires don’t burn out… they just wait.”
