The Handsome Family is the husband-and-wife duo of Brett and Rennie Sparks, formed in Chicago in 1993 and based in Albuquerque, New Mexico since 2001. Rennie, a published fiction writer, supplies the lyrics; Brett sets them to stately, hymn-like country melodies and sings them in a deep, deadpan baritone. Through the Trees (1998) made them alt-country cult heroes, and "Far From Any Road," from Singing Bones (2003), was hand-picked by music supervisor T Bone Burnett as the title theme for the first season of True Detective in 2014 — eleven years after its release the song topped Spotify's UK Viral chart, and it now sits at roughly 199 million streams. Andrew Bird recorded a full album of their songs, and Phoebe Bridgers covered "So Much Wine" in 2022. Their eleventh studio album, Hollow, arrived in September 2023, and the duo remains an active touring act more than thirty years in.
Why they matter to dark country
No working act embodies southern gothic americana more literally: Rennie Sparks writes genuine murder ballads and uncanny natural-history parables — drowned lovers, talking crows, haunted parking garages — and Brett delivers them like Appalachian hymns filtered through suburban dread. Singing Bones is a genre touchstone, and the True Detective placement of "Far From Any Road" was gothic country's single biggest crossover moment, introducing millions of viewers to the sound. Genre guides and playlists routinely place them at the very center of the dark country / gothic americana canon.
