Colter Wall, born in 1995 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan — son of a former premier of the province — released the Imaginary Appalachia EP as a student in 2015. Sleeping on the Blacktop from that EP landed in the 2016 film Hell or High Water and became a slow-burn streaming giant. His self-titled 2017 debut, produced by Dave Cobb, presented a startling package: a 21-year-old with a cavernous, weathered baritone singing murder ballads over a single microphone. Songs of the Plains (2018) and Western Swing & Waltzes (2020) turned him toward the working-cowboy material he lives himself, ranching in Saskatchewan between tours. After Little Songs (2023) he released his fifth album, Memories and Empties, in November 2025 on La Honda/RCA, cut at Nashville's RCA Studio A with co-producer Pat Lyons. In 2026 he cancelled the remainder of the album's tour and stepped away from live performance indefinitely, telling fans plainly that he was mentally unwell and needed time to heal — refunds were issued automatically.

Wall defined the sound modern playlists mean by 'dark country': sparse instrumentation, tape-warm production, and a baritone that sounds carved from a church pew. Kate McCannon is the streaming era's canonical first-person murder ballad; The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie put crossroads-devil imagery back at the genre's center; Sleeping on the Blacktop became the gateway for an entire ecosystem of gravel-voiced imitators on YouTube and Spotify. His 2026 retreat from touring only reinforced the lonesome, unknowable persona the genre prizes.
