I Ain't the Man That Prayed (Alt 1)

Intro

Verse 1 I used to kneel by candlelight, With both hands open wide Begging for a little grace To find me where I hide But the floor got cold beneath me, And the silence learned my name By the time the morning found me, I was not the man that prayed

Pre-Chorus I left my faith beside the door, With my coat and my old shame Some men lose the war outside, Some burn from inside the frame

Chorus I ain’t the man that prayed, I ain’t the boy that cried I left him somewhere in the smoke Where the last good angel died I ain’t the man that prayed, No mercy in my hands I asked the Lord to save me once, Now the dark knows where I stand

Verse 2 There’s a hymn I still remember, But I don’t sing it clean It comes out low and broken, Like a ghost inside a dream Mama said, “The Lord will hear you,” If your heart still wants the light But mine quit reaching upward On a long and hungry night

Pre-Chorus I ain’t angry at the heavens, I ain’t proud of what I lost But every prayer I ever made Came back carrying a cross

Chorus I ain’t the man that prayed, I ain’t the boy that cried I left him somewhere in the smoke Where the last good angel died I ain’t the man that prayed, No mercy in my hands I asked the Lord to save me once, Now the dark knows where I stand

Bridge If you find him in the ashes, Lay him down and walk away He was softer than this world deserved, And too broken here to stay I ain’t the man that prayed, I ain’t the boy that cried I left him somewhere in the smoke Where the last good angel died I ain’t the man that prayed, No blood left to bleed I used to beg the sky for mercy, Now the night kneels down to me

Outro I still know every word. I just don’t know who they’re for.
