My Halo’s Rusted to the Bone (Alt 1)

They used to say I had a shine But rust sets in with blood and time Ain’t no polish for a past like mine I wear my wrongs like borderline

Baptized in whiskey, born in fire Truth ain’t holy — it just tires I ain’t fallen, I just leaned Where the light don’t reach between

My halo’s rusted to the bone Don’t sit right, never shone Bent by hands that meant to save Now it crowns a soul they couldn’t brave It don’t glow, it don’t blind Just a relic of the mess I hide My halo’s rusted to the bone... And I still wear it proud

They want clean and born again But I’ve been dirt since who knows when I gave the good a fair damn try But grace don’t stick to men like I

So let 'em preach and raise their glass To stories written clean and fast Mine’s a hymn with busted strings Out of tune but still it sings

My halo’s rusted to the bone Weathered through, chipped and lone Ain’t no angel on this road Just a man who carries what he owed Don’t need wings or borrowed light I ride by fire, not what’s right My halo’s rusted to the bone... But it’s mine alone

My halo’s rusted to the bone Don’t shine bright, but it’s my own Might not pass their sacred test But I sleep just fine with my regrets So say your prayers, I’ll keep my flaws At least I earned each line I cross My halo’s rusted to the bone... And I ain’t layin’ it down
