Trail of a Thousand Promises (Alt 1)

I carved my word in smoke and sand, Watched it fade from my own hand. Said I’d forgive, said I’d stay true, But every lie just sounded like you.

Black coffee, black sky, no sleep tonight, My mercy ran out before the light. A man can bend just so damn long, Before the bending turns him wrong.

There’s a trail of a thousand promises, Each one broke a piece of me. I tried to be the kind they prayed for, But kindness burned too easily. Now my boots print truth in ashes, And I walk where saints don’t see. A trail of a thousand promises, And not one kept for me.

I swallowed guilt like holy wine, Let time decide who crossed the line. But time just laughed, the bastard thief, Took my hope and left my grief.

They said “turn back,” I said “not now,” Too many ghosts behind my vow. If I’m damned, I’ll take the blame, But mercy won’t forget my name.

There’s a trail of a thousand promises, Each one burned beneath my feet. I gave the world a better man, And it gave me back deceit. Now I ride through smoke and silence, With no prayer left in me. A trail of a thousand promises, And blood where faith should be.

Once I swore I'd die forgiving, Now I just keep ridin’ on. There’s peace somewhere in sinning, When the good in you is gone.

There’s a trail of a thousand promises, Still burning in my wake. I tried to love, I tried to change, But I can’t give what they can’t take. Now I ride with fire behind me, And the storm ahead to see — A trail of a thousand promises, And the last one belongs to me.

“One… promise… left… to break.”
